Great text Blue Magpie ! I have added it in "1.What is Qigong ?"

Thank you Webmaster!

Can we think Qi Gong is an internal martial art? Is it a basic training for all Chinese martial arts? I do the pole standing (zhan zhuang) regularly, is it also belong to Qi Gong? The principle seems similar.

I think that qigong is not a martial art in itself, but a part (an important part) of internal martial arts systems. You are right, Zhan zhuang is a qi gong exercise. And this exercise is  used in internal martial arts systems.

Zhan zhuang is meant to make qi-flow smoother, to make the practitioner be aware of the energy flow in the body, to relax the muscles and perfect body alignment, but also to train the mind, to cultivate calmness (when fighting, being calm is vital).

Some teachers have their students stand in zhan zhuang for 45 minutes straight. It makes the whole body shake. But it is wrong. Maintaining one posture for that long damages the cartilages. You should not stand in zhan zhuang for more than 5-10 minutes.

Debate: What do you think of this quotation below from Miyamoto Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings : Gorin-no-sho" ? Do you apply this principle yourself in your martial art or in your life?

Quote from Miyamoto Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings : Gorin-no-sho" :
Quote
The mountain-sea spirit means that it is bad to repeat the same thing several times when fighting the enemy. There may be no help but to do something twice, but do not try it a third time. If you once make an attack and fail, there is little chance of success if you use the same approach again.

I practice Tai Chi, only in the push hand exercises, we use some tai chi movements and feel some techniques of attack or defend, i don't know whether it is pratical in the real situation, it is most thought as a martial art to keep the health.
